Blog #5 - Session 5 - E-facilitation

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown us the urgency to go online. This last session has given me an opportunity to apply what I've learned throughout the ED403 course. I get to participate in designing a short online course. In session 5, I learned first-hand how to design and run an online course. Working with my team and delivering a course online was a wonderful experience. We allocate each day for each member and were each tasked to create the content and learning activities for each day. A final assessment was offered on the last day of the course. This tests students' understanding of the course. I designed the course content for days 2 and 3. I was given the opportunity to showcase the challenges of online learning in the context of the Solomon Islands. The two main challenges discussed were affordability and accessibility. These issues were related. One commonality between these two is the lack of ICT infrastructures. Other challenges such as staff and student training were ...

Blog #4 – Session 4 – eLearning Practices in Higher Education

I learn important eLearning practices in this session. Practices that will add value to my teaching. I learned about microlearning. In the first week of the session, we design our microteaching through a micro learning environment design (MicroLED) process. My microLED involves; the overview, and the lesson plan which includes the assessments (formative & summative) that I will integrate into my microteaching. This exercise is quite useful because it's more than an activity for this ED403 course, the microteaching I designed will be used in my course. In fact, I am creating it purposely to be used in the upcoming weeks when the particular topic will be delivered to students. Microteaching is relevant to my context. It is effective and cheap. In SINU, where resources are scarce this is a cost-effective yet efficient way of teaching especially challenging topics. Furthermore, microteaching saves time which is important for such courses as human anatomy and physiology (A &...

Blog #3 – Session 3 – eLearning Trends in Higher Education

For me, this session itself is trendy! J I have learned something trendy and useful from this session. The following eLearning trends were covered to some length – learning analytics, BYOD, mLearning, virtual reality, augmented reality, makerspaces, and assessments.   The concept of action analytics in learning is crucial for teachers and students alike. It helps determine the capacity and behavior of our students (Norris, Baer & Offerman, 2009). These are insightful for instructors to make informed and productive decisions. Ultimately, it will help us productively work toward desirable outcomes. At our University here in the Solomon Islands, learning analytics technologies and applications haven’t been utilized. I will work with my faculty to find out if we can exploit its usefulness. As it stands, we are wasting time, energy, and money on learning strategies that we do not have immediate empirical evidence to predict the success of the learning strategies. Concerning BY...

Blog #2 – Session 2 – Learning Resources & Technologies

It is yet another insightful session. Let’s share and reflect! As new learning resources and technologies are available, the way we teach, learn and assess are also changing. Whether the changes are for the better depends on the educators’ maximal utilization of the available learning tools and resources. Indeed, the onus is on us. We are educators as much as learners in our pursuit of greatness. We need to be creative. Innovate learning environment that are engaging, interactive, relevant, flexible, personal and profound. Importantly, our knowledge and skills in ICT need to stay updated and current. There are scores of digital tools and media resources that are available. Technology and media although often used interchangeably, have distinct definitions (Bates, 2019). In education, technologies are basically tools that can be used to teach, learn and assess. While media is an act of creation of content and/or communication, that which intermediates or interprets (Bates, 2019). In e...

Blog #1 - Session 1- Technology Enabled Learning (TEL) & Future of Higher Education

My ED403 learning journey begin with a interesting read from Teaching in a Digital Age by Tony Bates (2016). From the start, my conception about online learning is steered towards the right direction. Bates clearly pointed out that online learning is not merely moving method of classroom teaching and assessments online. That won't change a thing. He puts it eloquently, "it is lack of imagination" that restrict us from designing an immersive learning experiences. I realized that the concept of flexibility and personalization are key in online learning. From the three models of TEL, Community of Inquiry (CoI) conveys a fundamental fact about online learning, it's an collaborative, engaging, and interactive community. There're seven (7) principles outlined by Vaughan, Cleveland-Innes and Garrison, (2013) that I find useful in TEL. I can fulfil principle 4 by integrating problem based assessments such as case studies after each module have been covered. Case study eva...
